On December 21 (local time), President Trump stated on the social networking service Truth Social, "Governor Jeff understands how important Greenland is to national security," and added, "He will strongly advance America's interests for safety, security, alliances, and the survival of the world." Governor Landry also commented on his appointment as special envoy in a post on X (formerly Twitter), saying, "It is an honor to serve in making Greenland a part of the United States."

Although it was not specified what role Governor Landry would take on as special envoy to Greenland, the appointment appears to be closely related to President Trump's intention to incorporate Greenland as U.S. territory. Earlier this year, shortly after taking office, President Trump declared that he intended to make Greenland, a territory of Denmark, part of the United States. Since then, he has repeatedly asserted U.S. jurisdiction over Greenland and has not ruled out the use of military force.

Vice President J.D. Vance also visited a U.S. military base in Greenland earlier this year and criticized Denmark for not investing adequately in Greenland's security.

Denmark has strongly opposed these moves by the Trump administration. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated from the outset of President Trump's claim to incorporate Greenland, "Greenland is not for sale." In August, Denmark summoned the acting U.S. ambassador to lodge a protest.

Amid the ongoing conflict over Greenland, the Danish Defense Intelligence Service named the United States as a potential security risk in a report released earlier this month. The report pointed out that the United States, increasingly prioritizing its own interests, "is using its economic and technological superiority as a means of power, and this also applies to its allies and partners."
