A Vietnamese national mother suspected of abandoning her newborn baby, resulting in the baby's death, has been handed over to the prosecution while in custody.
On December 22, the Women and Juvenile Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced that it had referred Ms. A (in her 20s), a Vietnamese international student and mother, to the prosecution in custody on charges of child abuse resulting in death. Another Vietnamese international student, Ms. B, who assisted with the delivery, was referred without detention on charges of child abuse resulting in death.
According to the police, Ms. A is suspected of abandoning her baby in front of a building near Dongguk University Seoul Campus in Jung-gu, Seoul, at around 6:25 p.m. on December 14. Ms. B is accused of assisting in the abandonment at the scene and participating in the crime.
At the time, police and firefighters responded to a report that "a newborn baby was abandoned in a paper bag," but despite their efforts, the baby ultimately died.
