Preservation and Development Conflict to Be Addressed at National Palace Museum on December 22
Amid heated controversy over redevelopment in front of Jongmyo Shrine, the architecture academic community is holding an emergency seminar.
The Architectural History Association of Korea will host an academic seminar on the theme of "City, Architecture, and Cultural Heritage" at the auditorium of the annex of the National Palace Museum of Korea in Seoul on the afternoon of December 22. The seminar will directly address the recent conflict between preservation and development surrounding Jongmyo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Professor Cho Jaemo of Kyungpook National University will present on the architectural value of Jongmyo Shrine as a World Heritage site. Professor Woo Dongseon of Korea National University of Arts will analyze Seoul's urban policies and the preservation of its historical and cultural environment. Research Professor Kim Youngsoo of University of Seoul will introduce cases in which World Heritage listings have actually been canceled and explain the characteristics of the World Heritage system.
The association stated, "Seoul is a historic city that possesses World Heritage sites such as Changdeokgung Palace and Jongmyo Shrine, yet it is constantly under development pressure," adding, "We intend to examine these issues from the perspective of architectural history."
