According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on December 21, the morning low temperatures nationwide on December 22 are forecasted to range from -10 to 0 degrees Celsius. In inland areas, temperatures are expected to be around -5 degrees, while some mountainous regions in Gangwon Province may see lows near -10 degrees.
In the southern regions, morning temperatures are expected to drop by about 5 to 10 degrees compared to the previous morning, making it feel even colder. The expected morning lows for major cities are as follows: Seoul, Incheon, Cheongju, and Jeonju at -5 degrees; Suwon, Wonju, Daejeon, and Sejong at -6 degrees; Chuncheon at -7 degrees; Gangneung at -1 degree; Gwangju at -3 degrees; Busan at 0 degrees; Ulsan at -2 degrees; and Daegu at -4 degrees.
From midday onward, the cold is expected to gradually ease, with high temperatures reaching between 3 and 12 degrees Celsius, which is similar to or slightly above the seasonal average. However, icy patches may form on shaded roads, backstreets, bridges, tunnel entrances, ramps, and other areas where temperatures remain low, so extra caution is advised for both drivers and pedestrians.
The sky will be mostly clear nationwide, but the east coast and Jeju Island will see occasional cloudiness. On Jeju Island, except for mountainous areas, very strong winds are expected to persist until dawn on December 22, so special attention should be paid to facility management and safety to prevent accidents.
Strong winds are also expected over the seas around Jeju Island, the far southern part of the East Sea (excluding the waters off Ulsan), and the far southern part of the South Sea, with waves reaching heights of 1.0 to 4.0 meters. Vessels navigating or operating in these waters should exercise caution.
There may also be gusty winds accompanied by thunder and lightning over the seas around Jeju Island. Along the east coast, high waves caused by swells are expected to crash forcefully onto beaches and may even sweep over rocks and breakwaters.
