The Gyeonggi Province Fire and Disaster Headquarters will strengthen fire safety management at 2,685 schools in the province from December 22 of this year through February of next year.
The Fire and Disaster Headquarters expects that, with school construction projects concentrated during the winter break, risks associated with carelessness during hot work such as welding and cutting, as well as aging electrical installations, will increase. Therefore, fire watchers will be assigned to schools undergoing construction, and schools will be instructed to review safety management plans in advance before any hot work is carried out.
In addition, fire safety training will be provided for school administrative managers and staff, and various measures will be implemented, including recommending inspections and replacement of aging electrical installations.
Furthermore, schools will conduct their own disaster preparedness drills and fire prevention campaigns, and evacuation drills and safety rule promotion activities will be strengthened to prepare for emergencies such as fires or earthquakes.
According to the Fire and Disaster Headquarters, over the past five years, there has been an annual average of 34.8 fires at school facilities in the province. The main causes were electrical factors (46%) and carelessness (30%), which together accounted for 76% of all incidents.
