Showcases Video of Donated Vehicles in Action at Relief Sites

Hyundai Motor Company announced on the 21st that it donated eight Ioniq 5 vehicles and charging infrastructure to the World Food Programme (WFP), a United Nations agency responding to the food crisis, and released a video showing the donated vehicles actively working at relief sites.

This donation of vehicles and charging infrastructure by Hyundai Motor Company was carried out as part of a business agreement signed between Hyundai and the World Food Programme in July of last year.

In October last year, Hyundai sent the Ioniq 5 vehicles to the World Food Programme Mobility Centre (Fleet Centre) located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The vehicles were then modified at the centre to suit the requirements of regional relief activities, after which they were delivered to WFP field offices around the world, where they are now being actively operated.

In addition, Hyundai has supported the construction of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in 12 countries where WFP offices are located, establishing a foundation for stable EV operations in the field.

Furthermore, Hyundai supported the installation of a total of 14 solar power facilities in these 12 countries, enabling each country office to generate on average 84% of its required electricity independently. As a result, it is expected that approximately 520,000 dollars (770 million won) in annual operating costs can be saved.

In particular, in developing countries where WFP offices are located, power outages occur frequently, and the offices have relied on diesel generators to supply electricity each time. With the introduction of solar power facilities, it is expected that each office will be able to receive a more stable and sustainable supply of electricity.

Hyundai Donates Ioniq 5 to UN World Food Programme... Showcases Relief Efforts in the Field Hyundai Motor Company announced on the 21st that it donated eight Ioniq 5 vehicles and charging infrastructure to the World Food Programme, a United Nations agency addressing the food crisis, and released a video showing the donated vehicles actively working at relief sites to build consensus on responding to the climate crisis.

The documentary video released by Hyundai this time highlights the devastation faced by the Philippines in the midst of the climate crisis and the efforts of the World Food Programme to address it. The partnership video showcases the significance of the business agreement and demonstrates how well-suited the Ioniq 5 is for relief activities.

Notably, Hyundai has further enhanced the meaning of this collaboration by applying advanced new technologies to the relief vehicles. During the vehicle modification process in Dubai, Hyundai pilot-tested innovative technologies such as the soon-to-be-commercialized ‘transparent metal-coated heated glass,’ optimizing all eight vehicles for relief operations.

This technology, developed by Hyundai for the first time in the world, involves coating the front windshield with about 20 different metals, including silver, in 10 ultra-thin layers.

With a voltage of 48V, the glass emits heat, allowing snow, frost, or moisture accumulated on the windshield to be quickly removed. In hot weather, it can block about 60% of solar energy, making it effective for relief activities in both hot and cold climates.

A Hyundai official stated, “Through the video, we wanted to share the stories of local residents vulnerable to the climate crisis who are striving to protect their homes and show their love for their homeland. This support for the World Food Programme goes beyond a simple donation and will lead to sustainable relief activities in the field, such as carbon neutrality and cost savings.”
