On December 20, Prime Minister Kim Minseok emphasized the need for national-level support, stating that "Jeollanam-do is the future strategic hub that will lead Korea's advanced industries."
At the "K-Government Policy Briefing" held that afternoon at the Kim Daejung Auditorium in the Jeollanam-do Provincial Office, Prime Minister Kim said, "Just as the saying goes, 'Without Honam, there is no nation,' Jeollanam-do is a key pillar of national development," and added, "It has ample potential to become the center of future strategic industries such as AI, space, and energy."
Despite being held on a weekend, the briefing, co-hosted by the Prime Minister's Office and Jeollanam-do, drew around 1,000 residents, demonstrating high interest. During the event, Prime Minister Kim personally explained the achievements of government administration and the future direction of state affairs, followed by a Q&A session with the residents.
Prime Minister Kim stated, "The more remote and less developed a region is from Seoul, the more government policies and budgets should be prioritized for it," and pledged, "We will drive a great renaissance in Jeollanam-do."
Regarding the establishment of a national medical school, he also stressed, "I will work to ensure that Jeollanam-do's key issues become real driving forces for balanced national development."
In addition, Prime Minister Kim outlined the government's major policy directions, including ▲sovereignty of the people and K-democracy ▲confident diplomacy ▲establishing a transparent economic order ▲fostering AI-based future industries ▲realizing a K-cultural nation.
Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, remarked, "It is highly significant that the Prime Minister visited Jeollanam-do in person to share the direction of state affairs with the residents," and added, "Jeollanam-do is ready to lead Korea’s new leap forward by making AI and energy the engines of future growth." He continued, "We will achieve tangible results that residents can feel through close cooperation with the central government."
During the briefing, residents also raised local issues.
Regarding the ongoing calls for relocating the headquarters of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation and the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives to Jeollanam-do, which is a hub for agriculture and fisheries, Prime Minister Kim responded, "During discussions on the second round of public institution relocations, we will also consider the relocation of these headquarters from the perspective of balanced national development."
In response to the suggestion to institutionalize the basic income for newborns, which Jeollanam-do is pioneering, he said, "I agree with the policy in terms of its potential for development."
Meanwhile, prior to the briefing, Governor Kim held a separate meeting with Prime Minister Kim, requesting the allocation of more than 100 medical school seats and the establishment of university hospitals with at least 500 beds each in Mokpo and Suncheon, in connection with the creation of the Jeollanam-do Integrated National University National Medical School. He also proposed the creation of the "RE100 Future Advanced National Industrial Complex" and the designation of a "National Advanced Strategic Industry Specialized Complex for Secondary Batteries" in the Gwangyang-Suncheon area, as well as the construction of an energy highway and the early expansion of transmission facilities to increase renewable energy capacity.
