On the 19th, Dail Community announced, "Following our victory in the first trial, we have also won the appeal against Dongdaemun-gu," adding, "This outcome, which marks the 38th anniversary of Bapfor’s free meal service for marginalized neighbors, is a result of the court siding with us."
Previously, Dongdaemun-gu had issued a demolition order, claiming that Dail Community had illegally expanded the building used as a free meal center. Dail Community, stating that it had already reached an agreement with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, refused to comply, leading Dongdaemun-gu to impose a compulsory fine of 283.28 million won. Last year, Dail Community won the administrative lawsuit regarding this matter, but Dongdaemun-gu appealed, leading to the second trial.
Choi Ildo, CEO of Dail Community, said, "This victory is not just for Bapfor, but also a ruling that gives courage and hope to numerous welfare organizations that care for marginalized neighbors even in difficult conditions." He added, "I hope that the most vulnerable sites will no longer suffer repeated harm in the face of administrative and legal standards."
Bapfor was established in 1988 under the Ssanggul Bridge in Dapsimni-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, providing free meals to the homeless and becoming a community meal center where citizens, students, and international youth volunteers come together.
