Discussions Remain on Special Prosecutor Nomination and Dual Special Prosecutor System

Song Eon-seok, Floor Leader of the People Power Party, and Chun Ha-ram, Floor Leader of the Reform New Party, will continue discussions on the introduction of a special prosecutor bill regarding the Unification Church through a luncheon meeting scheduled for the 21st.

On December 19, Chun stated via social media, "We are continuing consultations with the People Power Party regarding the special prosecutor bill on the Unification Church, and several key issues still require further discussion."

Song and Chun held their first official discussion on the Unification Church special prosecutor bill on December 17. The main issues include the targets and scope of the special prosecutor's investigation, as well as who will have the authority to recommend the special prosecutor. After a party strategy meeting that day, Song told reporters, "We have generally reached a consensus," adding, "I expect that we will need to discuss further how to determine the authority for recommending the special prosecutor."

Another topic under discussion is whether to handle the Unification Church special prosecutor bill independently or together with the Min Junggi special prosecutor bill. Chun stated, "Given the high level of public interest and demand, we are working swiftly to ensure that the Unification Church special prosecutor bill can be addressed independently first," adding, "We are also carefully considering whether to proceed concurrently with other issues, from the perspective of maintaining public trust." In response, Song said, "Our party has proposed a dual special prosecutor system, covering both the Unification Church and Min Junggi cases, and I understand that the Reform New Party has also mentioned the need for both special prosecutors," adding, "However, I believe the Reform New Party is still discussing internally whether to pursue a dual special prosecutor system or to proceed with just one."
