Introduction of Intelligent Selective Monitoring System Equipped with AI Capabilities
On December 19, Mapo District in Seoul (Mayor Park Gangsu) announced that it had newly installed 137 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at 33 locations throughout the district this year, aiming to ensure the safety of residents and tourists and to strengthen crime prevention measures.
CCTV footage plays a crucial role in preventing a variety of everyday risks, including serious crimes, traffic accidents, theft, illegal dumping of garbage, and child safety incidents. In particular, by providing real-time video during criminal incidents, it enables swift responses and greatly contributes to solving cases.
With the addition of the new 137 cameras, Mapo District now operates a total of 4,028 CCTV cameras. Through its Integrated CCTV Control Center, the district has strengthened its rapid response system in cooperation with relevant agencies such as the police and fire departments.
The Mapo District Integrated CCTV Control Center operates 24 hours a day, providing an average of 22 video feeds daily to the police and other related agencies, thereby contributing to the response to various incidents such as safety accidents, theft, and property damage.
Additionally, Mapo District has introduced an "intelligent selective monitoring system" equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities for its CCTV cameras. This system automatically detects situations such as loitering, falls, and violence, and delivers alerts in real time to monitoring screens, enabling more efficient and precise surveillance. By linking with the Seoul Smart City Safety Network service, the district has also enhanced its ability to respond quickly and accurately to various needs, including emergency disaster response, population density monitoring, and support for vulnerable groups.
Furthermore, Mapo District has integrated CCTV cameras with nine "AI crowd density analysis systems" installed on Red Road, allowing for real-time analysis of crowd density. Depending on the risk level, the system displays warning messages and broadcasts audio alerts, helping pedestrians easily recognize crowded situations. This system has operated effectively during Halloween and the year-end holiday season, improving pedestrian safety and contributing to the creation of a safe Red Road without accidents.
Mayor Park Gangsu stated, "We are meticulously monitoring even the less visible areas through CCTV, creating a warm and reassuring Mapo for our residents." He added, "We will continue to actively adopt innovative technologies to eliminate blind spots and further enhance safety."
