Naju City in South Jeolla Province is set to comprehensively upgrade aging traffic safety facilities at intersections in Bitgaram Innovation City to ensure pedestrian safety at night and prevent traffic accidents.

On December 18, Naju City announced that it will invest a total of 200 million won to replace old floodlights with high-efficiency LED floodlights at 58 intersections in the city, including the Korea Electric Power Data Network (KDN) intersection in Bitgaram-dong, as part of a project to install new traffic safety facilities.

LED floodlights at crosswalks are traffic safety facilities that help drivers secure visibility at night and assist in identifying pedestrians, while also providing pedestrians with a safer crossing environment. These facilities are effective in preventing intersection traffic accidents.

In Bitgaram-dong, a large number of intersections and signal facilities were installed in 2014 with the creation of the innovation city. However, as more than 10 years have passed since their installation, there have been ongoing safety concerns due to decreased illumination and non-functioning lights.

In response, Naju City plans to completely remove the existing outdated floodlights and sequentially install 399 new high-efficiency LED floodlights, significantly improving nighttime visibility and intersection safety.

Bitgaram-dong is a densely populated area with residential, commercial, and public facilities, resulting in high pedestrian and vehicle traffic. The city expects that this replacement project will not only resolve nighttime pedestrian inconveniences but also have a significant effect in preventing traffic accidents.

A Naju City official stated, "Many of the intersections in Bitgaram-dong have continued to use the original facilities from the initial development, resulting in severe aging. Through this LED floodlight replacement, we aim to enhance the perceived safety of our citizens," adding, "We will continue to identify and address traffic safety vulnerabilities to create a safer urban environment."
