President Lee Announces on Facebook
"A Highly Meaningful Achievement in Breaking Down Barriers Between Central and Local Governments to Find Solutions"
On December 17, President Lee Jaemyung commented on the resolution of the Gwangju military airport relocation issue through an agreement among stakeholders, stating, "This is a highly meaningful achievement in which the central and local governments broke down barriers, respected the voices of the region, and found solutions together."
In a Facebook message that day, President Lee said, "The issue of relocating the Gwangju military airport, which had repeatedly faced difficulties due to numerous conflicts, concerns, and complex interests, has made substantial progress and found a clue to a solution."
President Lee also emphasized that this agreement is closely connected to the issues raised at the first town hall meeting following the launch of the People’s Sovereignty Government. He remarked, "Today's agreement carries even greater significance," and praised the 'six-party consultative body'-comprised of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Gwangju Metropolitan City, Jeollanam-do Province, and Muan County-for resolving a longstanding challenge based on dialogue and trust. He stressed that the significance of this agreement lies in the central and local governments breaking down barriers and respecting regional voices to find a solution.
President Lee further stated, "This will serve as a model case of transforming conflicts that divided the local community into cooperation rather than confrontation, and into mutual growth rather than clashes." He added, "I hope that this experience of shaping a shared future through interregional solidarity will spread nationwide and become a new catalyst for balanced development across Korea."
President Lee expressed his gratitude to Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do Province, Kang Gijung, Mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, and Kim San, Head of Muan County. He also said, "Above all, I extend my thanks and congratulations to the local residents who patiently gathered their wisdom over a long period." He continued, "With the belief that the answer is always found on the ground, I will continue to listen closely to the vivid voices of the people," and pledged, "Building on today's achievement, I will steadfastly walk the path of a true People’s Sovereignty Government."
