Mayor Lee Kangdeok: "I Will Continue to Do My Best in the New Year for Pohang's Advancement and the Happiness of 500,000 Citizens"
Pohang City announced the "Top 10 Pohang City Administration News Items That Attracted the Most Attention from Citizens in 2025" on December 17.
Amid high interest in regional industry news such as the enactment of the K-Steel Act and the successful attraction of a global AI data center, achievements in various fields closely tied to citizens' daily lives-including the economy, education, residential welfare, and transportation-were selected as the top 10 news items of the year.
The city conducted a survey via social media and other channels for five days from December 8 to 12, with a total of about 2,000 citizens participating.
In particular, the enactment of the "K-Steel Act" received the most attention, reflecting citizens' hopes that the steel industry, which is the foundation of Pohang, would overcome its crisis and achieve a new leap forward amid internal and external uncertainties.
Additionally, strong interest in new industries-such as the attraction of a global AI data center and the hosting of the World Green Growth Forum in the AI and MICE sectors, which are new growth engines for Pohang-was interpreted as citizens' desire to open a sustainable urban future through industrial diversification.
Furthermore, news such as the signing of a memorandum of understanding for the establishment of an international school, reflecting expectations that Pohang could become a world-class education city, and the selection of Pohang as a complex marine leisure tourism city, which is expected to accelerate its transformation into a stay-type tourist destination, also garnered significant attention from citizens.
Efforts and achievements in residential welfare policies-such as launching the "1,000 Won Housing" program for young people and newlyweds, promoting customized welfare policies throughout the life cycle, and attracting new POSCO dormitories to the city center for regional coexistence, all of which are linked to urban regeneration-were also well received.
Other areas closely related to citizens' daily lives also drew considerable interest, including the opening of the Pohang-Yeongdeok Expressway, the expansion of green spaces through the creation of Hwanho Neighborhood Park and Cheolgil Forest Plaza, and the reopening of Songdo Beach as an urban resort for citizens after 18 years.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "Despite the challenging circumstances this year, we were able to lay the foundation for a leap forward through continuous efforts for a sustainable and globally competitive city together with our citizens," adding, "In the new year, I will continue to do my best to advance Pohang and create a city where all 500,000 citizens can be happy together."
