Housing Design Connecting Youth, Newlyweds, and Disaster Victims
Earns Top Rating in Provincial Evaluation
Andong City was officially recognized for the achievements of its regionally tailored housing policies by being selected as the ‘Best Institution’ in the 2025 Gyeongsangbuk-do Residential Welfare Sector evaluation. On December 16, Andong City received the Governor’s Commendation.
Each year, Gyeongsangbuk-do evaluates cities and counties within the province on various housing-related areas, including architecture and housing administration, residential welfare, and landscape design, selecting outstanding institutions and individuals for recognition. This year, Andong City received high marks in the residential welfare sector for both the effectiveness of its policies and their tangible impact on the community.
This award demonstrates that Andong City’s people-centered policy design, which views housing not just as a form of welfare but as a core element of ‘settlement competitiveness’ and encompasses a wide range of residents from youth and newlyweds to disaster victims, has led to real, measurable results.
Andong City has consistently implemented practical support policies, such as subsidizing brokerage fees for newlyweds purchasing their first home to ease their initial housing costs, and providing opportunities for prospective and newlywed couples to improve their living environments by utilizing older homes.
In particular, the city’s locally focused supply of public rental housing for newlyweds and young people has drawn attention. Andong City has signed an agreement with Gyeongbuk Development Corporation and selected a private operator to build 100 units of public rental housing in the Yongsang-dong area. The project is expected to be ready for occupancy as early as the beginning of 2028, and is anticipated to contribute to housing stability and local settlement for young people and newlywed households.
In addition, Andong City has contributed to creating a stable residential environment for citizens by simultaneously implementing disaster-responsive residential welfare policies, such as emergency housing support for wildfire victims and the construction of newly built purchase-rental housing.
An official from Andong City stated, "We will continue to discover and expand effective residential welfare policies that improve the quality of life for our citizens."
