Survey of 1,000 Jeju Residents Aged 19 and Older
To Be Used for Setting Policy Directions for the Casino Industry
Jeju Special Self-Governing Province conducted the "2025 Jeju Casino for Foreigners Residents Awareness Survey," targeting 1,000 Jeju residents aged 19 and older.
This survey was carried out to understand residents' perceptions of the overall casino industry and to use the findings as foundational data for future policy development.
According to the results, residents generally gave positive evaluations of the casino industry's economic contributions.
Positive responses outweighed negative ones regarding key items such as the increase in foreign tourists, expansion of tourism-related spending, job creation for residents, and fiscal contributions through the tourism promotion fund.
In addition, for the area of social contribution that casino operators should prioritize, "support programs for youth job creation" ranked highest for the third consecutive year, followed by support for nurturing local student talent and support for village development projects.
Regarding policy direction, 39.5% of respondents favored strengthening regulations, while 30.8% supported increased assistance, indicating that residents want a balanced enhancement of both regulations to ensure industry integrity and support to boost the local economy.
Most respondents said they receive information about the casino industry mainly through broadcast media such as television, internet news articles, and YouTube or social media, highlighting the need to diversify information delivery methods for residents.
Negative perceptions of the casino industry were also identified. Social concerns such as increased gambling tendencies, adverse effects on youth educational environments, and damage to the region's image were noted, reflecting the dual nature of the industry, which offers both economic benefits and risks.
Additionally, only 42.2% of residents were aware that Jeju Province directly manages and supervises casinos for foreigners, indicating a need to strengthen information provision about the supervisory system.
Based on the survey results, Jeju Province plans to enhance the information delivery system for the casino industry, expand contributions to the local community, and continue implementing policies to prevent social concerns.
Kim Yangbo, Director of Tourism Exchange at Jeju Province, stated, "Through this survey, we have thoroughly identified residents' perceptions and demands," adding, "Moving forward, we will strengthen the transparency and accountability of the casino industry, minimize social concerns, and build an industry structure that provides tangible benefits to youth and the local community."
