Yeungnam University (President Choi Oechul) announced on December 17 that students from its Department of Robotics Engineering achieved outstanding results by winning two awards at a national robotics competition.
The "Five Guys" team, part of the Power Supply club in the Department of Robotics Engineering at Yeungnam University, participated in the 28th National University Student Battle Robot Competition hosted by Changwon National University at CECO (Changwon Convention Center) on December 3. The team won the top prize in both the Mission-Performing Robot category and the Battle Rumble category, achieving the distinction of winning in two categories simultaneously.

The "Five Guys" team consisted of second-year students from the Department of Robotics Engineering-Yang Jaeseok (team leader), Kim Minsang, Choi Wanuk, Park Jaehyun, and Chun Donguk-as well as Im Seunghyun, a second-year student from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The team independently developed a high-performance autonomous robot system equipped with an NVIDIA Jetson AGX Xavier module, integrating YOLO-based vision recognition technology and LiDAR-based autonomous navigation technology, and entered the competition with this system.
Even in a complex competition environment, the robot was highly praised for its technical completeness, as it could fuse data from various sensors in real time to recognize situations and execute autonomous decision-making and movement flawlessly. In particular, this achievement is significant because it demonstrated the practical feasibility of sensor fusion and AI-based autonomous robot technology in a real-world competition setting.
Yang Jaeseok, who led the team, commented, "I have always been interested in autonomous robots and have participated in various activities, but this is the first achievement we have made as a team with my peers, which makes it even more meaningful." He added, "As we enter an era where AI technology leads the world, I will continue to take on various challenges to grow as a convergent talent suited for the times." He also said, "I hope to continue the legacy of the Power Supply robotics club, which is now recruiting its 36th class this year."
Meanwhile, the Department of Robotics Engineering at Yeungnam University supports students in developing problem-solving skills and interdisciplinary technological expertise required in the actual industrial field through hands-on, project-based education and club activities. This recent achievement is regarded as a representative example of the department's educational outcomes.
