The city announced that on December 17, it was selected as the best institution in the nationwide local government housing welfare evaluation and received the Presidential Citation at the "2025 Korea Housing Welfare Expo" held at the aT Center in Seoul.
This event, hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and co-organized by Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH) and Housing & Urban Guarantee Corporation (HUG), was established to honor individuals and organizations who have contributed to the advancement of housing welfare, and to share the achievements and outstanding cases of housing welfare policies implemented throughout the year. Through this award, Gwangju City has solidified its status as a leading city in housing welfare.
Since launching its Housing Welfare Center in 2023, Gwangju City has laid the foundation for its housing welfare initiatives. In particular, this year, the city proactively identified households at risk of housing insecurity through public-private cooperation and actively promoted support programs for victims of rental fraud and for improving housing conditions for vulnerable groups, earning high marks in the evaluation.
The city established a close network with related organizations such as the Child Protection Agency, Senior Welfare Center, and Youth Support Center. In addition, by operating a "Mobile Housing Welfare Counseling Center," the city implemented hands-on administration by listening to and resolving citizens' concerns directly in the field.
Gwangju City also stood out in its response to the ongoing issue of rental fraud. The city quickly enacted relevant ordinances and established and implemented practical recovery plans, including safety inspections of affected homes and emergency repair support.

Of particular note to the judges was the "Aging In Place Housing Environment Improvement Project." In response to the super-aged society, the project went beyond simply replacing wallpaper and flooring, offering customized improvements tailored to the physical needs of the elderly and people with disabilities, earning praise for creating an environment where residents can age healthily in their own homes.
Mayor Bang Se-hwan stated, "This Presidential Citation is a valuable achievement made possible by the unified efforts of both the public and private sectors to enhance housing welfare in Gwangju City. We will continue to closely monitor and support citizens to ensure there are no blind spots in housing welfare, and do our utmost to improve the quality of life for vulnerable groups."
