The Gyeongbuk Culture and Tourism Organization (President Kim Namil) has selected Pohang Homigot and the Homiban Peninsula Coastal Trail as the recommended destinations for December in its monthly "Travel in Gyeongbuk Through Photos" series.
Pohang Homigot is the place where the sun rises first on the Korean Peninsula, making it a renowned sunrise spot that attracts travelers filled with hopes for the New Year every winter. The sun emerging above the blue horizon of the East Sea delivers a warm sense of awe even in the cold winter air, offering a special moment to those closing out the year and preparing for a new beginning.
The "Sangsaengui Son" (Hand of Harmony) sculpture, which is the most iconic image associated with Homigot, creates an even more majestic scene against the backdrop of the winter sea. The two hands facing each other on the land and in the sea symbolize the coexistence of humanity and nature, as well as the past and future, making this one of Pohang's most beloved tourist attractions. In addition, the area around Homigot Sunrise Plaza is filled with attractions such as the National Lighthouse Museum and the Pohang Sea Fossil Museum. Well-equipped facilities for winter visitors make it an easy and comfortable destination for family travelers.
Escaping the bustle of the city to gaze out over the open sea and reflect on the year is a special journey in itself. Watching the sunrise while making wishes for the New Year is an experience that will remain in your memory for a long time. Homigot, which delivers a warm sense of inspiration even in the cold wind, is a must-visit winter destination in Gyeongbuk this December.
The Homiban Peninsula Coastal Trail, which runs along the Homiban Peninsula in Pohang, is one of Gyeongbuk's premier coastal trekking courses, shaped by both nature and time. This area has been designated as a National Marine Ecological Park in recognition of its outstanding marine ecological value, and you can encounter vibrant nature along every part of the trail. The pristine East Sea and well-preserved coastal ecosystem allow visitors to fully experience the vitality of nature even during winter. The trail is divided into several sections, allowing travelers to choose from short walks to long-distance treks, which is one of its key advantages.
Another attraction of the Homiban Peninsula Coastal Trail is the opportunity to visit geological sites designated as National Geoparks. The coastal rocks and strata, formed over millions of years, vividly showcase the geological value of the Homiban Peninsula. The rocks shaped by waves and wind create spectacular natural works of art. Among the highlights along the trail is the Heundigi Cave, a unique landform created by natural erosion, which serves as a major exploration point. The cliffs and winter sea surrounding the cave complete the grand scenery.
This trail, where the National Marine Ecological Park and National Geopark meet, is more than just a walking course. Many of the sections are relatively gentle, making it enjoyable without much difficulty even in winter, and there are hidden photo spots throughout, adding to the pleasure of the walk. As a space where nature conservation and hands-on experiences coexist, it also holds significant educational value. With its blend of sea, geology, and ecology, the Homiban Peninsula Coastal Trail is a unique winter destination recommended by Gyeongbuk.
No winter trip to Pohang is complete without enjoying the region's abundant seasonal delicacies. Fresh seafood caught from the cold East Sea is the highlight of Pohang's winter culinary experience. In particular, gwamegi, a winter delicacy, is one of Pohang's signature dishes, loved for its chewy texture and savory flavor. A steaming bowl of seafood stew is perfect for warming up after a walk along the winter sea. At Pohang Jukdo Market and local fish markets, visitors can enjoy fresh seafood at reasonable prices. A meal accompanied by the winter seascape will make your trip even more satisfying.
President Kim Namil stated, "Homigot and the Homiban Peninsula Coastal Trail are representative destinations where you can deeply experience the natural value of Gyeongbuk," adding, "I hope you will create many precious memories with your family, friends, and loved ones as you walk through nature, gaze at the sea, and savor the local flavors during the upcoming year-end season."
