Pay Taxes with Accumulated Points

The Seoul Metropolitan Government will introduce a 'food waste reduction points system' starting next year. Points will be awarded based on the amount of food waste reduced compared to last year's disposal volume.

On December 17, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it will launch the new 'food waste reduction points system,' which awards points based on reduction performance in connection with the Eco Mileage program, which has 2.6 million households enrolled.

The 'food waste reduction points system' targets households using RFID-based pay-as-you-throw food waste bins, where the amount of food waste disposed can be measured. If households achieve a reduction of 10% to 30% or more compared to the same period last year, they will receive points that can be used like cash. These points are automatically credited as Eco Mileage and can be used for tax payments, utility fees such as maintenance or gas bills, or converted into Onnuri gift certificates (paper) or mobile Seoul Sarang gift certificates for use.

To enhance the fairness of the reduction assessment, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has established the 'food waste reduction points system,' which collects and evaluates actual disposal data from the RFID food waste management system in collaboration with the Korea Environment Corporation. Citizens can easily check their reduction rates and awarded points calculated through this system.

Applications for participation in the first half of the year will be accepted from January 5 to 23. Interested citizens can apply after signing up on the Eco Mileage website. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis for 1,000 participants in each half of the year, totaling 2,000 participants annually. With the introduction of the new points system, citizens who are confirmed to participate will receive 1,000 points.

Kwon Min, Director of the Climate and Environment Headquarters of the Seoul Metropolitan Government, stated, "Reducing food waste is a practical action in daily life with significant environmental and economic effects, such as carbon reduction and waste treatment cost savings. We look forward to the active participation of citizens in the new reduction points system, which will be newly implemented in 2026."
