On December 16, the city of Daejeon awarded the 37th Daejeon Metropolitan City Culture Awards to four citizens who have contributed to the development of local culture and arts and the promotion of community values.
The Daejeon Metropolitan City Culture Awards are presented annually to recognize citizens who have made significant contributions to the promotion of culture and arts and the development of the local community. This year marks the 37th edition of the awards.
In October, the city convened the Culture Awards Selection Committee and selected the following recipients: Min Donggi in the field of visual arts, Im Hyunseon in the field of performing arts, Kang Shinyong in the field of literature, and Kim Youngtae in the community contribution division.
Min Donggi, the recipient in the visual arts category, oversaw the design of commemorative coins and tickets for the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics, elevating the status of Korean culture and arts in the field of national symbol design.
He was also highly recognized for his ongoing contributions to society through art, including nurturing young talent and providing art education for citizens in the Daejeon area, as well as donating artworks to welfare centers for people with disabilities.
Im Hyunseon, the recipient in the performing arts category, has served as a professor in the Department of Dance at Daejeon University for over 20 years, dedicating herself to broadening the foundation of dance culture in Daejeon. She has been recognized for promoting the artistry of Korean dance and Daejeon's cultural capabilities both domestically and internationally through numerous solo performances, volunteer performances, and overseas tours.

Kang Shinyong, the recipient in the literature category, has been active in creative writing since his debut in 1978, and has systematically organized and documented Daejeon's poetry literature through the "Hanbat Poets Series." His contributions to establishing the foundation of Daejeon's literary community have been highly praised.
Kim Youngtae, president of the Daejeon Metropolitan Volunteer Association, received the award in the community contribution division for putting into practice the values of sharing and solidarity through the operation of the "Happy House Soup Kitchen," disaster relief activities, and both domestic and international volunteer work. In particular, he was recognized for his leading role in supporting vulnerable groups and providing emergency relief at disaster sites, thereby contributing to the local community.
Lee Jangwoo, Mayor of Daejeon, expressed his gratitude, saying, "The efforts of the award recipients, who have quietly dedicated themselves to culture, arts, and the community in their respective fields, have shaped Daejeon as it is today."
He added, "I hope you will continue to take the lead in making Daejeon a city where culture elevates the dignity of the city and becomes part of citizens' daily lives."
