The Korea Energy Information Culture Foundation held the "Energy Communication Forum" under the theme of "Sustainable Energy, Creating a Culture of Communication Together" at the Yongsan War Memorial Conference Hall on December 16.
The foundation stated that the forum was organized to facilitate extensive discussions on communication strategies and directions for cooperation to establish a sustainable future energy system, with key stakeholders from the government, industry, academia, and the media participating in the event.
The forum began with a keynote speech by Professor Kim Seoyong of Ajou University on "Building a Sustainable Energy Society Together." This was followed by a presentation from Song Yugun, Head of Group at Korea Research International, on "Energy as Seen by the Public" based on the results of a national energy perception survey, and a presentation by Jeon Seongjae, Head of the Energy Communication Office at the foundation, on "The Foundation as a Hub for Energy Communication - Achievements and Future Directions."
Subsequently, a comprehensive panel discussion was held, chaired by Professor Lim Jaekyu of the Department of Economics at Soongsil University, with Lee Daeyeon, Head of the Power Policy Research Division at the Korea Energy Economics Institute, Park Sujeong, Secretary General of the Citizens' Coalition for Administrative Reform, and the keynote speakers as panelists.
Professor Kim Seoyong explained that energy acceptance is a concept shaped by the complex interplay of the "big six" factors: risk perception, trust, knowledge, emotion, and experience. He emphasized that energy acceptance is not fixed but changes according to information, experience, and context, highlighting the importance of providing scientific information and communication based on trust at its core.
Song Yugun, Head of Group, presented the results of the national energy perception survey conducted biannually this year.
According to the survey, 86.3% of respondents agreed on the necessity of pursuing sustainable energy policies, with 48.3% identifying "establishing an energy system for a sustainable future" as the most important policy goal. The survey results reflected increased public awareness of the worsening climate crisis and the importance of energy security.
Jeon Seongjae, Head of the Energy Communication Office, introduced the foundation’s vision of being a "communication organization that creates a sustainable energy culture," and shared that the foundation has been promoting the establishment of research, public relations, education, and communication infrastructure.
He added that the foundation will continue to enhance public acceptance through trustworthy communication on energy issues and by building public consensus throughout the process of formulating and implementing future-oriented energy policies and systems.
During the Energy Communication Forum, the foundation unveiled its renewed corporate identity (CI). As a communication organization dedicated to improving understanding of energy policies, the foundation introduced a new symbol representing the butterfly effect, signifying the far-reaching impact of energy information on the economy and society as a whole.
Lee Jusoo, President of the Korea Energy Information Culture Foundation, stated, "This forum reaffirmed that public acceptance and the supporting elements of awareness, empathy, and participation are essential throughout the entire process of designing, implementing, and evaluating energy policies." He added, "We will continue to faithfully fulfill our role as a trust-based hub for energy communication to build an energy society where the public is informed, understands, and participates."
