Korea Craft & Design Foundation, K-Tradition Leaps Toward a Global Industrial Ecosystem

A Complete Lifecycle System Connecting Startup, Scaling Up, and Global Expansion
Korean Culture with a Trendy Sensibility Makes a Quantum Leap into a High-Value Global Industry

Leading global luxury brands are launching new products inspired by Korean gat hats and mother-of-pearl, while traditional patterns featured in K-pop artists' stage costumes are once again captivating fans around the world. This marks an era in which traditions, once confined to museums, are being reinterpreted as the trendiest content and attracting global attention. Traditional culture is no longer merely something to be preserved; it is now firmly established as a sophisticated and creative 'business asset.'

Systematic incubating is essential to translate this trend into tangible industrial achievements. 'TodayTraditional Startup,' an initiative led by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister Choi Hwi-young) and the Korea Craft & Design Foundation (President Jang Donggwang, hereafter referred to as KCDF), serves as a key platform for this purpose. The program goes beyond simply offering modern reinterpretations of traditions, focusing instead on building sustainable business models in the market and nurturing brands with global competitiveness.

The greatest strength of 'TodayTraditional Startup' is its seamless support structure that connects each stage of startup growth. In addition to the existing 'preliminary-early-growth' stages, a new 'leading enterprise' category will be introduced next year as the highest tier. This will complete a comprehensive system that covers the entire life cycle of traditional culture startups.

At the 'Preliminary Startup (TodayTraditional Youth Preliminary Startup Contest)' stage, the program discovers high-potential ideas based on traditional culture and helps lay a stable foundation for business through basic entrepreneurship education and business model advancement.

For early-stage startups ready to enter the market, the program provides up to three years of support, including an average of approximately 100 million won in commercialization funding, as well as assistance with branding, prototype production, and initial market development. This stage meticulously supports the process from idea realization and product development to market validation.

Growth-stage startups that have achieved a certain level of progress receive advanced programs for scaling up. With an average of over 100 million won in funding available for up to two years, the program offers strategic support for expanding domestic distribution channels, attracting investment (IR), and establishing mass production systems. The focus is on transforming these companies from small workshops into robust enterprises with stable production systems and distribution networks.

The newly established 'leading enterprise' stage, launching next year, is aimed squarely at the global market. Companies that have proven themselves domestically will receive dedicated support to open overseas distribution channels and evolve into global brands. In this way, 'TodayTraditional Startup' will complete a comprehensive growth ladder, spanning from inception and growth to international expansion.

Another distinctive feature of this initiative is its close collaboration with private sector accelerators (ACs). KCDF matches startups with accelerators who possess expertise in specific fields, providing practical growth support ranging from one-on-one mentoring and brand strategy to investment connections.

While companies based on traditional culture already possess strong craftsmanship and artistic capabilities, many remain at the starting line when it comes to management and market strategy. Accelerators focus on transforming these strengths into market viability. They help build sustainable revenue structures that move beyond crowdfunding or fandom-based consumption and facilitate meetings with domestic and international buyers to open new sales channels. Collaboration with influencers and marketing strategies also help expand brand awareness.

In particular, the challenge of 'mass production,' which is the biggest hurdle for craft-based companies, is a core area of support for accelerators. Establishing a production system that ensures stable supply regardless of order timing is essential for traditional businesses to secure industrial competitiveness. In this process, practical solutions are sought together, strengthening the structural stability of these companies.

Participating companies work with accelerators to refine their business models and gain real investment opportunities through demo days and investment consultations. Entrepreneur networks are naturally strengthened, and 'TodayTraditional Startup' is becoming more than just a support program-it is emerging as an industrial hub for traditional culture startups.

Whereas past traditional culture policies focused on preservation and transmission, 'TodayTraditional Startup' is dedicated to expanding the use of tradition into everyday consumption and global markets. Kim Jiwon, Director of the Traditional Culture Promotion Division at KCDF, stated, "Traditional culture gains true vitality when it is consumed in our daily lives, not locked behind museum glass. The 'TodayTraditional Startup' program will serve as a solid stepping stone, ensuring that entrepreneurs' innovative ideas do not go to waste but instead grow into globally competitive businesses."

In fact, companies that have grown through this program are achieving meaningful results both domestically and internationally, modernizing tradition across various fields such as household goods, fashion, and tech products. 'TodayTraditional Startup' demonstrates that traditional culture is no longer merely a beneficiary of sponsorship but can expand into a future national industry and a new engine for growth.
