Controversy Over Disclosure of Nationality in Dormitory Disciplinary Notice

Soongsil University has issued a statement regarding the recent controversy over the disclosure of nationality in a dormitory disciplinary notice.
On the 16th, Soongsil University stated, "There was no intention to target any specific country or to incite conflict between nationalities."
On the 8th, Soongsil University announced disciplinary actions for students who were expelled from the dormitory (Residence Hall) for violating dormitory regulations, specifying the students' nationality as "China." Some criticized the university for disclosing nationality information that was not directly related to the reason for the disciplinary action, calling it excessive. They argued that mentioning a specific nationality could foster negative perceptions and feelings toward people from that country.

The university clarified that this incident was unrelated to "anti-China" sentiment. It further explained, "The main issue is not discrimination based on nationality, but rather the prevention of fire accidents caused by smoking in the dormitory." The university also acknowledged, "We recognize that there is room for improvement regarding the practice of including nationality in disciplinary notices." The university added, "In the future, only information directly related to dormitory disciplinary actions will be included in such notices."

Soongsil University stated that it will soon post an announcement on the dormitory bulletin board indicating that students' nationalities will no longer be included in any future notices.
