Special Screening of the First Barrier-Free Film, Korean Independent Films, Film by Former Dokdo Security Guard, and Dokdo Stationery Book Concert
A Total of 70 Participants
"While it may be common on the mainland, it's rare on the island!" A late-night movie theater opened on Ulleungdo, the island where the sun rises.
The 24-hour free night film screening, organized by the Ulleung County lifelong learning club "Jeolhaegodo," was held from 7:00 p.m. on December 13 to 7:00 p.m. on December 14 in the main conference room of the Ulleung Hanmaeum Center.
This screening event was part of the "2025 Ulleung County Lifelong Learning Club Support Project," which aims to encourage voluntary participation in learning among local residents and lay the foundation for forming a learning community. "Jeolhaegodo" designed this experimental cultural program in the form of a "24-hour continuous screening" and "night screening," allowing participation without time constraints for a full day. This approach took into account Ulleungdo's unique characteristics, where opportunities for cultural enjoyment are relatively limited in winter due to weather and transportation conditions.
The event centered around barrier-free film screenings, featuring Korean independent films such as "You and I" and "The World of Us," as well as late-night classic films. The program also included a book concert by Kim Minjeong, CEO of Dokdo Stationery, and a guest visit (GV) with director Kim Myungyun after the screening of the film "Sky, Wind, Stars, and Island." In total, the program consisted of screenings of nine feature films and two special events, forming a comprehensive cultural program. Approximately 70 people attended the event.
Among the films, the barrier-free screening of "Minari" was held as a special session in cooperation with the Ulleung County Center for the Visually Impaired, providing an opportunity for five individuals with severe visual impairments to enjoy the film together.
Audience members experienced the films through audio descriptions, sharing the scenes and emotions of the characters, and responded positively, saying, "It was a time to fully understand and be moved by the film," and, "We hope such screenings continue in our community."
The book concert by Kim Minjeong, CEO of Dokdo Stationery, was the first official book talk held on Ulleungdo since the publication of "Welcome to Dokdo Stationery." She candidly shared her 12-year journey and experiences in promoting Dokdo to the public, which was met with enthusiastic support from the audience.
The final program of the event featured a screening of "Sky, Wind, Stars, and Island" and a virtual GV with director Kim Myungyun, a former Dokdo security guard, conducted via ZOOM. This provided a meaningful opportunity to delve into the creative process and the messages contained in the work, marking a fitting conclusion to the 24-hour night film screening event.
A representative from Jeolhaegodo expressed deep gratitude to the residents who participated in this unique 24-hour relay screening and stated, "We will continue to pursue various experimental programs that all residents can enjoy and participate in."
An official from Ulleung County stated, "The lifelong learning club support project is meaningful in spreading a resident-led learning culture in the region," and added, "We will continue to provide ongoing support so that club activities can naturally connect with the local community."
