Pilot Project for Chemical Recycling of Banner Waste
Recognized as Top Award-Winning Example of Regional-Corporate Collaboration
Changwon Special City announced on December 15 that its "Pilot Project for Chemical Recycling of Outdoor Advertising Banner Waste" was selected as an outstanding example of regional-corporate collaboration for 2025 and received the top award at the special grant competition award ceremony held by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety at the Sejong Government Complex.
This recognition was the result of a comprehensive evaluation by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, which reviewed cases from local governments across the country that solved regional issues and created new value through collaboration with businesses. The selection process involved assessments by public officials and private sector experts with extensive knowledge and experience in the regional economy.
To address the annual incineration of banner waste, the city launched a pilot project in June this year in partnership with domestic companies such as SK Chemicals and Kakao, chemically decomposing waste banners and converting them into recycled raw materials.
For this initiative, the city established a comprehensive collaboration system throughout the entire process, including strengthening the collection and sorting system for waste banners, supporting technological cooperation between the city and companies, building a circular economy foundation, and verifying the industrial applicability of recycled raw materials. These efforts received high marks in the evaluation.
In particular, this case is attracting benchmarking inquiries from other local governments, as it goes beyond simple upcycling by establishing a foundation for producing recycled raw materials that can be directly used in actual industrial recycling processes.
Lee Jaekwang, Director of Urban Policy, stated, "Winning the top award for this pilot project on recycling outdoor advertising banner waste demonstrates how collaboration with local companies has opened new avenues for utilizing banner waste and is the result of our ongoing efforts to create a pleasant urban environment. Going forward, we will continue to prioritize citizen safety and actively pursue sustainable outdoor advertising policies and various initiatives."
