The Gwangju Regional Veterans Office announced on December 15 that three teams from its jurisdiction-the Goryeoin Village, the Umi Hope Foundation, and Jangheung County in Jeollanam-do-have been selected as recipients of the 26th Veterans Culture Award.
The Veterans Culture Award was established to honor those who have sacrificed and contributed to the nation, and to recognize and reward individuals and organizations that have helped spread a culture of respect for veterans in daily life.
This year marks the 26th edition of the Veterans Culture Award, and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs selected a total of five teams, including the three from the Gwangju office's jurisdiction.
Goryeoin Village was recognized for establishing a veterans community model that encompasses daily life, education, and welfare for the descendants of Korean independence patriots, as well as for operating the "Saenal School" for children of Goryeoin compatriots, thereby supporting the development of their identity and career paths.
The Umi Hope Foundation has continued to run scholarship programs for the descendants of national patriots and has promoted the social value of honoring veterans by supporting the "Heroes Family Program" for the families of uniformed heroes.
Jangheung County in Jeollanam-do contributed to expanding the region's veterans infrastructure by attracting the first National Jangheung Patriots Cemetery in the Jeonnam area, building a veterans center, and establishing a memorial history hall for Ahn Jung-geun.
