On December 15, Gijang County announced that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport had officially confirmed Gijang Station as a stop on the KTX-Eum Jungang Line (Bujeon~Cheongnyangni).
Gijang County employees are performing a congratulatory performance for attracting the KTX-Eum Gijang Station.
The county welcomed this decision, emphasizing that it was the result of collective efforts by all residents. With the KTX-Eum now stopping at Gijang Station, accessibility to Gijang County will be greatly improved, which is expected to not only revitalize local tourism but also have a positive ripple effect throughout the regional economy.
Gijang County considers this confirmation as the first step into the 'KTX Era of Gijang.' The county plans to strengthen the role of Gijang Station as a hub for tourism in eastern Busan and as a gateway to the region. Going forward, Gijang County will continue to request an increase in the number of KTX-Eum stops from Korail and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
Based on a business agreement signed with Korail's Busan-Gyeongnam Headquarters in April, the county will also accelerate efforts to promote rail tourism. Gijang County plans to review policies that will provide tangible benefits to the local economy, such as measures to boost tourism and commercial activity in connection with the nearby Gijang Market.
Jung Jongbok, Mayor of Gijang County, stated, "Together with the residents of Gijang, I sincerely welcome the opening of the 'KTX Era of Gijang.'" He added, "The KTX-Eum stop at Gijang Station will not only revitalize local tourism but also serve as a turning point that brings new energy to the regional economy." He continued, "Building on this decision, we will further strengthen the role of Gijang Station and actively pursue an increase in KTX-Eum services."
Since 2022, Gijang County has carried out a variety of participation campaigns, including a countywide petition, to attract the KTX-Eum stop. This year, the county has worked with local businesses and organizations to promote policies aimed at increasing the number of Gijang Station users, such as offering discounts at tourist and cultural facilities to holders of ITX-Maum and Mugunghwa train tickets. In November, Gijang County also focused its administrative efforts on explaining the necessity of the stop to Korail and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
