How to Pioneer Eco-Friendly Arctic Routes? Busan Port Authority Hosts Expert Lecture

How should we pioneer eco-friendly Arctic shipping routes? Busan Port Authority (BPA, President Song Sanggeun) has invited experts in the field of Arctic routes.

The authority announced that on December 15, it held a special lecture by an Arctic route expert at the BPA headquarters to review the institution's 2026 work plan related to Arctic routes and to develop strategies to strengthen Busan Port's competitiveness in the era of Arctic shipping routes.

Busan Port Authority invited Kim Jwakan, Distinguished Professor of Environmental Engineering at Busan Catholic University, as the lecturer for this special event. Professor Kim currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' Arctic Route Advisory Committee, where he helps identify policy tasks for the utilization of Arctic routes.

Professor Kim explained the increase in greenhouse gas emissions in the Arctic region and changes in the habitat of marine mammals due to the recent rise in vessel traffic, emphasizing the importance of eco-friendly development in the Arctic.

He also proposed establishing a 2050 carbon neutrality roadmap for Busan Port and operating an eco-friendly port as part of BPA's ESG management.

Song Sanggeun, President of Busan Port Authority, said, "We will actively prepare so that Busan Port can proactively respond to the upcoming era of Arctic shipping routes."
