Prosecution Decides Not to Indict on December 1
"Unlikely That She Was Aware of the Fraud"
Nam Hyunhee (44), a former national fencing representative who was accused of aiding Jeon Cheongjo's fraud, announced that she has been cleared of all charges after publicly releasing the prosecution's non-indictment decision.
On the 13th, Nam posted on her social media account the official non-indictment document from the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors’ Office regarding the charges of aiding fraud under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes and violating the Act on Regulation and Punishment of Concealment of Criminal Proceeds. According to the document, the prosecution decided not to indict Nam on December 1. The decision states that “rather than recognizing or participating in Jeon Cheongjo’s fraudulent acts or other crimes, Nam Hyunhee (the suspect) was more likely exploited by Jeon Cheongjo.” The prosecution concluded that there was insufficient evidence to prove Nam’s involvement in the alleged crimes.
Nam Hyunhee, former national fencing representative accused as an accomplice in Jeon Cheongjo's fraud case, is appearing at Songpa Police Station in Seoul on November 8, 2023.
The prosecution further explained, “Even when considering the evidence obtained during the initial investigation, as well as materials secured following requests for reinvestigation and supplementary investigation, it is difficult to conclude that the suspect was aware of and participated in Jeon Cheongjo’s fraudulent acts.”
Attorney Son Sooho of the law firm Jihyuk also stated on his social media, “I have finally received the prosecution’s non-indictment decision in Nam Hyunhee’s case. The reasons for the non-indictment have once again been clearly confirmed.” He added, “It was determined that she was ‘exploited by Jeon Cheongjo,’ that even her iCloud password was provided and checked, and that there was no evidence found to prove she was aware of Jeon Cheongjo’s prior fraud, unpaid security guard wages, or the ongoing fraud investigation. With this, both the civil and criminal cases have concluded.”
Previously, in August 2023, Nam announced her remarriage to Jeon. Afterwards, suspicions arose about Jeon impersonating a third-generation chaebol illegitimate child and committing fraud. Nam also faced allegations that she assisted Jeon in raising investment funds. Additionally, there were suspicions that some of the criminal proceeds were transferred to Nam’s accounts, or used for leasing luxury homes or vehicles under her name.
Nam: “Mocking victims is another form of harm... Please stop the malicious comments”
On the 14th, Nam wrote on social media, “Speculation and gossip that are far from the truth keep being repeated, and on top of that, malicious comments are pouring in. Not only those involved, but also those watching are being deeply hurt.” She continued, “Mocking and criticizing victims is not just an opinion but another form of harm. Please stop the malicious comments.”
Meanwhile, Jeon is currently serving a 13-year prison sentence after being convicted in November last year on charges of fraud amounting to 3 billion won and assaulting Nam’s niece.
