Expectations for Housing Stability and Regional Revitalization
Ulleung County in North Gyeongsang Province has taken up the long-standing challenge of youth outmigration from the island.
The county will break ground on the construction of the public rental housing project, "Ulleung Island Youth Housing," in the Hyeonpo-ri area of Buk-myeon.
Hyejeong Construction, selected through an open bidding process, will begin construction of the public rental housing this month, officially commencing the building work.
The "Ulleung Island Youth Housing Project" aims for completion in December 2026, with a total project cost of 5 billion won funded by the Local Extinction Response Fund. The project covers a site area of 1,012 square meters and a total floor area of 982.3 square meters, featuring a four-story building with 15 public rental housing units.
This project was designed not only to address the housing shortage in Ulleung County but also to provide residents with stable living conditions, ultimately contributing to an increase in the local population and revitalization of the region.
In particular, with the recent opening of Ulleung Airport, demand is expected to surge in various sectors. However, the housing sector is facing a severe supply shortage compared to demand.
This new public rental housing aims to resolve these issues and provide a stable foundation for young people, newlyweds, and families-those who will shape the future of Ulleung County-to settle down. Beyond simply offering living spaces, the county plans to gradually increase the housing supply rate to improve the quality of life for local residents.
County Governor Nam Han-gwon stated, "Through the construction of the Ulleung Island Youth Housing, we will alleviate housing insecurity for Ulleung residents and continue to promote diverse housing policies to encourage population growth, making Ulleung a happy and livable island."
