Gyeonggi Province’s “Climate Action Opportunity Income” Program Surpasses 1.71 Million Subscribers, Offering Up to 60,000 Won in Rewards

The number of subscribers to Gyeonggi Province’s Climate Action Opportunity Income program has surpassed 1.71 million.

On December 14, Gyeonggi Province announced that, as of December 10, the number of users registered for the “Climate Action Opportunity Income” app-which provides rewards to participants who engage in carbon reduction activities in their daily lives-had reached 1,717,501.

Launched in July last year, the “Climate Action Opportunity Income” app allows residents to receive up to 60,000 won per person annually in local currency for participating in 16 climate action activities. Notably, active participation by residents has led to a reduction of 396,686 tons of greenhouse gas emissions, which is equivalent to planting 3.17 million pine trees.

Previously, in August, Gyeonggi Province conducted a survey of approximately 97,000 subscribers to the Climate Action Opportunity Income program. The results showed that 94% of respondents reported increased interest in environmental issues, while 90% said they were practicing more climate-friendly behaviors.

This demonstrates that the Climate Action Opportunity Income program not only provides simple rewards, but also effectively raises awareness and drives real behavioral change in residents’ daily lives.

Starting next year, Gyeonggi Province will expand the scope of climate action support to include university students enrolled in the province, even if their official residence is outside the region. In this regard, the “Gyeonggi Province Ordinance on Supporting and Expanding Climate Action Practice” is currently awaiting review by the Gyeonggi Provincial Council. If the ordinance passes, support for university students will be expanded from 2026.

Some cities and counties are also planning to provide additional rewards tailored to local characteristics, using their own financial resources.

In September, Gyeonggi Province held on-site information sessions on the Climate Action Opportunity Income program for 12 cities and counties, including Yongin. Starting next year, the app service will be rolled out sequentially in municipalities with secured budgets. Through these efforts, more residents are expected to participate in climate action and enjoy the benefits.

Meanwhile, Gyeonggi Province’s Climate Action Opportunity Income program received the Minister’s Award for Best Practice among metropolitan local governments in this year’s “Carbon Neutrality Best Practices” evaluation, organized by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment.
