The Coast Guard conducted an emergency rescue after crew members fell overboard from a merchant ship passing through the southern waters of Seogwipo, successfully saving all those involved.
According to the Seogwipo Coast Guard Station, at approximately 4:47 p.m. on December 12, a report was received stating that five crew members had fallen into the sea from Merchant Ship A (8,580 tons, 10 crew members) about 33 kilometers south of Seogwipo Port.
The Coast Guard immediately dispatched five patrol vessels, two coastal rescue boats, and a helicopter to the accident site upon receiving the report, and also requested rescue assistance from nearby ships.
The Coast Guard helicopter arrived at the scene at around 5:35 p.m. and began rescuing the five crew members who were in a life raft, using a hoist. By 5:52 p.m., all crew members had been rescued. All of the rescued crew members are foreign nationals and are reported to be in stable condition. They are being transported to a hospital in Jeju City.
