A festival where top Wushu practitioners from across the nation gather to compete will take place in Gyeongsan.
Gyeongsan City (Mayor Cho Hyunil) announced that the 2nd Gyeongsan Mayor's Cup National Wushu Competition will be held on December 13 at the auxiliary gymnasium of the Gyeongsan Indoor Gymnasium.
This event, hosted by the Gyeongsan City Sports Council (Chairman Kang Younggeun) and organized by the Gyeongsan City Wushu Association (Chairman Choi Yonghwa), will feature about 150 athletes competing in five divisions: kindergarten, elementary, middle, high school, and general. Participants will showcase the skills they have honed over time in heated matches.
Wushu is the Chinese pronunciation of the Chinese characters for "martial arts" (武術). It is a sport that reorganized traditional Chinese martial arts, known as Kung Fu, into its current form in the 1960s.
Wushu competitions are divided into "Taolu," which corresponds to forms in Taekwondo, and "Sanda," a one-on-one sparring format.
Taolu is categorized into barehanded routines such as Nanquan, Changquan, and Taijiquan, and weapon routines using implements like spears or swords.
This year's Mayor's Cup will also be held in both Taolu and Sanda categories.
Choi Yonghwa, Chairman of the Gyeongsan City Wushu Association, said, "I hope today's competition will serve as an opportunity to further raise public awareness of Wushu, and I wish all participating athletes will fully demonstrate the skills they have developed and put on a wonderful event."
Gyeongsan Mayor Cho Hyunil stated, "Wushu has been recognized globally for its value, as evidenced by its adoption as an official event in the Asian Games, and it has established itself as a pillar of community sports. We will continue to provide support and attention so that Wushu can take another leap forward as a local sport."
