A man in his 40s and his 9-year-old son were found dead in an apartment in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. Police are investigating the case, suspecting that the father killed his son before jumping to his death.
According to police on December 11, a 119 emergency call was received at around 5:55 p.m. reporting that "someone had fallen" at an apartment in Giheung-gu, Yongin.
Responding to a joint request from the fire department, police arrived at the scene and found a man in his 40s, referred to as A, who was presumed to have died after jumping from the 20th floor of the apartment. The police recovered his body.
Police then found a vehicle in the apartment parking lot using a car key found in A's pants pocket.
When police opened the car door, they found the body of A's 9-year-old son, referred to as B, in the back seat.
Based on the coroner's opinion that B likely died of asphyxiation due to neck compression, police believe that A strangled his son to death before jumping from the building.
After analyzing CCTV footage, police confirmed that A picked up his son, who attends a special needs school, in his car after school, drove to an apartment where they used to live, parked in the lot, went up to the apartment, and then jumped.
There was no evidence of third-party involvement in the movements from picking up his son to arriving at the scene of the incident.
It was reported that A had recently told his family that he was distressed after losing 200 million won in stocks.
A police official stated, "It is presumed that the man took his own life due to distress over personal matters," adding, "We are still investigating the exact circumstances, including the time and location of the son's death."
