Former Minister Jeon Jae-soo Resigns Over Unification Church Bribery Allegations
Ahn: "Do You Intend to Run for Busan Mayor... Clarify Your Position"
Ahn Cheolsoo, a member of the People Power Party, responded to the resignation of Jeon Jae-soo, the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, who has been accused of receiving money and valuables from the Unification Church, by questioning, "Are you preparing to follow in the footsteps of Kim Kyungsoo by running for Busan mayor after your resignation?" He demanded that Jeon clarify whether he intends to run in the local elections.
On December 11, Ahn wrote on his Facebook page, "Minister Jeon Jae-soo has resigned due to allegations of receiving money from the Unification Church. However, while the statute of limitations continues to run, he has only repeated denials and claims that the allegations are groundless." He also pointed out, "In particular, he has made no mention whatsoever regarding whether he will run for Busan mayor."
Ahn also mentioned that ahead of the 2018 local elections, then-Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Kyungsoo boldly declared his candidacy for South Gyeongsang governor, claiming he was not involved in the 'Druking' online comment manipulation scandal. Ahn said, "He temporarily deceived the residents and was elected, but the truth eventually came out and he could not avoid prison. Nevertheless, he continued to claim he was a conscience prisoner, and after being appointed to a minister-level position by President Lee Jaemyung, he is once again eyeing the local elections," he criticized.
Ahn stressed that if Jeon plans to run for Busan mayor after waiting out the statute of limitations, he must make that clear from the outset. Ahn stated, "Former Minister Jeon Jae-soo, are you looking to follow in Kim Kyungsoo's footsteps? Do you want to be elected Busan mayor while hiding the truth from the public after waiting for the statute of limitations to expire?" He added, "If not, you must clarify whether you intend to run for Busan mayor. Since you said this morning that 'the government must not be shaken,' shouldn't you also state clearly that you will not run for Busan mayor?"
