B/C Ratio of 1.2... Expected to Benefit 1.38 Million People
"Must Be Included in the 5th National Railroad Network Construction Plan"
On December 10, four local governments in Gyeonggi Province-Yongin, Seongnam, Suwon, and Hwaseong-announced that they held the final report meeting for the preliminary feasibility study of the 'Gyeonggi Southern Metropolitan Railroad' in the disaster situation room at Suwon City Hall.
The conceptual plan for the "Gyeonggi Southern Metropolitan Railroad," jointly promoted by four local governments: Yongin, Seongnam, Suwon, and Hwaseong.
At the meeting, the cities discussed additional action plans and future strategies to have the Gyeonggi Southern Metropolitan Railroad included in the 5th National Railroad Network Construction Plan.
The Gyeonggi Southern Metropolitan Railroad is a new metropolitan rail project spanning 50.7 kilometers, connecting the four cities from Sports Complex Station on Seoul Subway Lines 2 and 9, passing through Suseo Station, Seongnam Pangyo, Yongin Sinbong and Seongbok, Suwon Gwanggyo, and Hwaseong Bongdam.
The study estimated the construction cost at 5.275 trillion won and the annual operating cost at 62.4 billion won.
Previously, in a feasibility study jointly commissioned by these local governments in July 2023, the railroad project recorded a benefit-cost (B/C) ratio of 1.2, indicating high economic viability. As a result, they have requested the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to include this project in the 5th National Railroad Network Construction Plan.
The local governments expect that, once the railroad opens, approximately 1.38 million residents across the four cities will benefit. It is anticipated to alleviate severe rush-hour congestion on the Gyeongbu Expressway and Yongin-Seoul Expressway, while also improving residents' access to the Gangnam area of Seoul.
In particular, Yongin City expects that the new railroad will have a positive impact on the proposed 'Dongbaek-Sinbong Line.' The Dongbaek-Sinbong Line is a 14.7-kilometer railway connecting major transfer stations such as Seongbok Station (Shinbundang Line), Guseong Station (GTX-A and Suin-Bundang Line), and Dongbaek Station (Light Rail).
Lee Sangil, Mayor of Yongin, said, "I hope that the Gyeonggi Southern Metropolitan Railroad, which will benefit about 1.38 million people, will be included in the 5th National Railroad Network Construction Plan."
