"Jo Jinwoong Is Yi Sun-sin" "We Are Jo Jinwoong"... Controversy Erupts Over Support or Backlash Poster

Public Backlash Intensifies Over Past Criminal Record Controversy
Some Say, "The Poster Seems Created With a Specific Agenda"

A poster comparing actor Jo Jinwoong, who declared his retirement from the entertainment industry due to controversy over his juvenile criminal record, to Admiral Yi Sun-sin is spreading online and causing controversy. On December 10, various online communities and social networking services (SNS) posted a poster with the phrase "Jo Jinwoong is Yi Sun-sin." The center of the poster features phrases such as "We are Woong," "We are Jo Jinwoong," and "Committee for Guaranteeing a Second Life." On both sides, there are sentences like "Let only those without prior convictions for robbery or rape cast a stone," and "Guarantee the first life of living together." The poster also includes a palm print reminiscent of Ahn Jung-geun, silhouettes of a crowd, and a circular graphic evoking the Taegeuk symbol, giving it the appearance of a campaign poster.

Netizens who saw the poster expressed negative opinions, saying, "This is intelligent anti-fan activity," "It seems like it was made to deliberately provoke criticism," "It borders on hate, agitation, and division," "Even Jo Jinwoong would want this to stop," and "It seems like someone made this to stir up trouble." Some also pointed out the inappropriate comparison to historical figures, commenting, "Touching historical figures crosses the line," "How can you compare Yi Sun-sin and Jo Jinwoong?" and "Descendants should take issue with this."

Previously, it became known that Jo Jinwoong was involved in car theft and sexual assault cases while in high school and was sent to a juvenile detention center in 1994 after being tried on charges of robbery and rape under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes. There were also claims that he was fined for assaulting a theater troupe member during his unknown years and that his driver's license was revoked for drunk driving during the filming of the movie "Once Upon a Time in High School."

In response, Jo Jinwoong's side admitted to his juvenile delinquency but strongly denied the sexual assault allegations. However, as the controversy did not subside, Jo Jinwoong issued an official statement on December 6, just one day after the controversy arose, announcing his intention to retire. He said, "I deeply apologize for greatly disappointing those who trusted and supported me due to my disgraceful past. I humbly accept all criticism and, as of today, will cease all activities and bring my career as an actor to an end."
