A man was urgently arrested after driving under the influence of drugs and crashing into a motorcycle in the heart of Gangnam, Seoul, but he avoided being detained.
On December 9, the Seoul Gangnam Police Station announced that they had urgently arrested a man in his 40s, identified as A, the previous day on charges including causing injury by dangerous driving under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes and drug-impaired driving under the Road Traffic Act. The police applied for a detention warrant for A, but the prosecution rejected the request, and A was released.
According to the police, at around 10:40 a.m. the previous day, A is suspected of running a red light and crashing his car into a motorcycle near Nonhyeon Station in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. As a result of the accident, the motorcycle driver, a man in his 70s, was transported to the National Medical Center.
A stated that he regularly takes medication for depression, and a preliminary reagent test reportedly showed a positive result for benzodiazepines, an ingredient in depression medication.
The police plan to refer A to the prosecution without detention after additional investigations, including a detailed analysis by the National Forensic Service.
