Zohran Mamdani, Who Lived in a One-Bedroom Apartment in New York, to Move to a Mansion Over 10,000 Square Feet Next Month

Mamdani to Move into 'Gracie Mansion' Next Month
Features Five Bedrooms and a Grand Ballroom

Zohran Mamdani, 34, the Mayor-Elect of New York City, will be moving from his current one-bedroom rental apartment to a mansion of over 10,000 square feet.

According to The New York Times, Mamdani announced on December 8 (local time) that after his official inauguration as mayor on January 1 next month, he will move into Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the Mayor of New York City.

Currently, he lives with his wife in a small rental apartment in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens, New York. However, starting next month, he will reside at Gracie Mansion, located in the affluent Upper East Side of Manhattan. Mamdani stated, "Even if I no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will always live within me."

Since 2018, Mamdani has lived in a one-bedroom apartment in Astoria, Queens. This apartment is designated by New York City as 'rent-stabilized' to protect tenants, meaning there are certain limits on rent increases. The apartment is less than 800 square feet (about 22 pyeong), and the monthly rent is reported to be around $2,300. In New York, where housing costs are notoriously high, this is considered relatively affordable.

In contrast, Gracie Mansion, where he will be living, is a mansion built in 1799 with a total floor area of 11,000 square feet (about 309 pyeong). It features a dining room, a grand banquet hall, five bedrooms, and more. Since 1942, the City of New York has owned the property, which has undergone several renovations to serve as the official mayoral residence.

Meanwhile, Mamdani, a previously little-known political newcomer, caused a stir last June by defeating political heavyweight Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral primary. Born in Uganda, Mamdani immigrated to the United States as a child. He is the first Muslim to be elected mayor of New York City, the largest city in the United States.
