Survey of 9,000 Users Across 100 Companies
Rebuttal to Academic 'AI Skepticism'
OpenAI, the developer behind ChatGPT, has analyzed that the average daily working hours of employees could be reduced by one hour through the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
In its "State of AI in the Enterprise" report released on December 8 (local time), OpenAI surveyed 9,000 AI users across approximately 100 companies. The findings showed that users of its enterprise service, ChatGPT Enterprise, were able to save an average of 40 to 60 minutes per day by utilizing AI. In particular, professionals in data science, engineering, and communications saved about 20 minutes more than this average, and some respondents reported a reduction in their weekly working hours by more than 10 hours.
OpenAI stated, "Companies are rapidly expanding their use of AI. As a result, ChatGPT message usage has increased eightfold in the past year, and inference token usage has surged 320 times." The company added, "Case studies indicate that AI contributes to revenue growth, improved customer experience, and shorter product development cycles."
Previously, OpenAI's competitor Anthropic also released a report analyzing 100,000 conversations with its chatbot Claude, finding that AI could reduce task completion time by 80%. Based on this, Anthropic projected that AI could raise the annual growth rate of labor productivity in the United States by 1.8 percentage points over the next decade. However, Bloomberg pointed out that such analyses have not undergone peer review by other researchers. In August, a research team at MIT reported that most companies investing in generative AI projects had not gained any benefits. Subsequently, in September, researchers at Harvard University and Stanford University concluded that the results produced using AI amounted to little more than 'workslop'-meaningless work residue.
Regarding these academic findings, Brad Lightcap, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of OpenAI, commented, "There are many studies making various claims, but they do not match what we are actually seeing in the field." He added, "The pace of AI adoption in enterprises is accelerating, just as it is in the consumer market." Roni Chatterji, Chief Economist at OpenAI, also noted, "Three out of four people say they are now able to do things they couldn't do before," emphasizing, "This is often overlooked in discussions about AI and work."
