This award ceremony was hosted by the Presidential Committee for the Era of Local Autonomy and jointly organized by the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology (KEIT) and the Seoul Business Agency (SBA).
Haenam County has presented a future vision encompassing urban regeneration, environmental restoration, and strategies to address local depopulation through gardens, and is accelerating the creation of the "Southwest Coast Ecological Garden City" within the Solaseado Corporate City.
This project is a new garden city model that expands the concept of a garden to the entire city, and is being promoted across approximately 580,000 square meters of the Solaseado district. Including the Sani Garden, which opened last year, a total of nine private gardens will be established.
Private gardens No. 1 and 2 in Haenam, Moon Garden and Biwon, as well as Forest Arboretum, the first private arboretum in Haenam, have been attracting a steady increase in visitors, contributing to the growth of the local resident population.
Recently, new gardens have been created, such as the "Gil Garden" utilizing the wild green tea fields of Daeheungsa Temple, the "Gosan Ouga Garden," a traditional Korean garden at the Gosan Historic Site, and the "Masil Garden," which is built by local residents. These efforts are shaping a new garden city model that connects all of Haenam as a single garden.
Haenam County plans to improve living conditions and further develop sustainable rural strategies based on the spread of garden culture.
An official from the county said, "To grow into Korea's representative garden city where everyone wants to stay, we will go beyond simple landscaping projects and create a sustainable regional development model where people and nature coexist."
