A class action lawsuit is being pursued in the United States against Coupang’s U.S. headquarters following the leak of personal information belonging to more than 30 million members.
On December 7 (local time), SJKP, the U.S. law firm affiliate of Korean law firm Daeryun, announced that it would hold a press conference in Manhattan, New York, on December 8 to disclose plans to file a punitive damages lawsuit against Coupang in a U.S. court.
Daeryun stated that lawsuits will be pursued simultaneously in both Korea and the United States. Some plaintiffs for the punitive damages suit to be filed in the U.S. court have already been recruited, and additional plaintiffs will be sought through the press conference.
Previously, on November 29, Coupang announced that information from approximately 33.7 million customer accounts had been leaked. The leaked data included names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, and some order information.
Founded in 2010, Coupang’s Korean subsidiary is 100% owned by its U.S.-listed parent company, Coupang Inc. Coupang was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021. Kim Bomseok, the founder and chairman of Coupang Inc., who holds over 70% of the parent company’s voting rights, was born in Seoul but has acquired U.S. citizenship.
