National Education Commission Launches Special Committee on Humanities and Social Sciences: "Highlighting the Importance of Humanities in the AI Era"

Appointment Ceremony for the "Special Committee on Humanities and Social Sciences" Held by the National Education Commission on December 8

The National Education Commission, an administrative committee under the President, has formed a "Special Committee on Humanities and Social Sciences" and held its first meeting on December 8.


The Special Committee on Humanities and Social Sciences consists of ten members, selected to ensure a balance of expertise and regional representation. Kim Myunghwan, Professor Emeritus of English Language and Literature at Seoul National University, has been appointed as the chairperson.


Over the next six months, the committee will discuss policy measures on the following: ▲ seeking directions for the academic reestablishment of the humanities and social sciences and innovation of related departments, research institutes, and academic societies within universities; ▲ building a sustainable academic ecosystem and establishing institutional foundations, including fostering the next generation of scholars; ▲ and preparing legal and institutional frameworks for the balanced development of academic disciplines.


Cha Jeongin, Chairperson of the National Education Commission, stated, "As we enter an era of advanced science and technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), we must pay even greater attention to the importance of the humanities and social sciences." He emphasized, "The essence of education is the holistic development of human beings, and the primary purpose of national education is to teach what is right and wrong so that people can pursue a proper life. Therefore, the significance of education in the humanities and social sciences is growing." He also called on the committee to "propose valuable policies that will promote academic advancement and educational development in the fields of humanities and social sciences."
