Busan Transportation Corporation Wins Government Innovation Grand Final for AI-Based Crowd Accident Prevention System

The Only Local Public Corporation to Win for Two Consecutive Years

Busan Transportation Corporation (President Lee Byungjin) received the Minister of the Interior and Safety Award at the 2025 Government Innovation Grand Final for its 'AI-Based Crowd Accident Prevention System.'

Among local public institutions, Busan Transportation Corporation is the only one to have won this award for two consecutive years.

The Grand Final, hosted annually by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to select and promote outstanding cases of government innovation, is divided into three categories: participation and communication, civil service, and innovation in work practices. The corporation was recognized as an exemplary case in the innovation in work practices category.

The key innovation is 'AI congestion analysis.' By replacing traditional crowd monitoring, which relied on visual inspection, with AI, the system detects signs of danger in real time. The corporation was recognized for its innovation in creating an integrated system that links automatic alerts, emergency notifications, and crowd flow separation measures.

This system was actually deployed at Gwang-an Station during the recent Busan Fireworks Festival. Despite a crowd of approximately one million people, there were zero safety incidents. The corporation developed its own crowd density detection technology and monitoring system, completed emergency response training, and has fully implemented the system on-site.

In addition to safety, the corporation also achieved results in revitalizing the local economy. In September, Busan Transportation Corporation was recognized as an outstanding case in the '2025 Local Public Institution Local Economy Revitalization' category for its WeChat Pay-linked QR ticket payment service. The service was praised for improving convenience for Chinese tourists using the metro and encouraging consumption in areas near stations.

Lee Byungjin, President of Busan Transportation Corporation, stated, "The AI-based safety system is a case that has elevated the level of metro operations," adding, "We will create a metro system where citizens can feel safe, based on scientific safety management."
