The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and Arm, a British semiconductor design company, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to cooperate on talent development.
Kim Yongbeom, Chief of Policy Office at the Presidential Office, announced during a briefing at the Yongsan Presidential Office that the signing of this MOU was prompted by President Lee Jaemyung's meeting with Masayoshi Son, Chairman of SoftBank Group of Japan, and Rene Haas, CEO of Arm.
Kim stated, "Both sides will launch a working group to discuss the establishment of a semiconductor-specialized educational institution, tentatively named 'Arm School.' Through this initiative, we plan to train approximately 1,400 world-class semiconductor design professionals." He added, "This will become a valuable asset for strengthening the system semiconductor sector."
Additionally, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will accelerate efforts to designate semiconductor-specialized graduate schools. Kim explained that Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology is being considered as a candidate.
On this day, President Lee and Chairman Son agreed on the importance of guaranteeing basic rights in artificial intelligence (AI) and discussed President Lee's vision for a 'Basic AI Society.'
Chairman Son compared semiconductors to "a new weapon," stating, "To properly lead the AI era, a strong and responsible leader is needed, and President Lee is already wisely leading in this field. I respect him." He further advised, "As the memory alliance between Korea and the United States grows stronger, Korea's leverage will also increase."
However, Chairman Son pointed out, "Korea has a critical weakness: insufficient energy supply." He remarked, "Even considering Korea's current data center construction plans, preparations regarding energy are not sufficient."
Regarding this, Kim added that Chairman Son advised that securing energy is extremely important and more thorough preparation is necessary.
