Police Refer Man in His 60s to Prosecution for Stealing Over 10 Million Won from Restaurants and Cafes Nationwide

A man in his 60s who repeatedly broke into restaurants and cafes across the country and stole cash kept at the counter has been handed over to the prosecution in custody.

On December 2, the Seoul Songpa Police Station announced that Mr. A had been sent to the prosecution in detention on charges of theft under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes.


According to the police, from August 3 to November 17, Mr. A is suspected of secretly breaking into restaurants and cafes after business hours in 14 cities, including Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Yeongnam, a total of 33 times, and stealing a total of 14.2 million won in cash kept at the counter.


The police analyzed about 800 CCTV cameras at nationwide bus terminals and traced Mr. A's movements for 10 days, covering a distance of 700 kilometers, before locating and urgently arresting him in Busan.


The investigation revealed that Mr. A committed the crimes without carrying a mobile phone in order to evade the police, and it is known that he used the stolen cash for living expenses and transportation costs.


A police official stated, "Individuals should ensure that locks are properly maintained on entrances and windows of restaurants and other establishments, and in the event of a crime, we urge prompt reporting to the police."
