The police have launched an investigation into fake accounts impersonating the President on social networking services (SNS) and demanding money.
The National Office of Investigation announced to the media on December 1 that "the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Phishing Investigation Unit has begun an investigation and will impose strict punishment in accordance with the law and principles."
The impersonation accounts reportedly post official photos and videos of the President's events, and the account holders send messages to specific individuals demanding money.
The police are also investigating an online post circulated last week impersonating the President, which claimed that there would be an increase in the overseas stock capital gains tax rate and the introduction of a new holding tax.
A police official stated, "Please pay particular attention to various types of false information impersonating the President, and if you are asked for money online, do not respond and report it to the police immediately."
