The Salvation Army Korea Territory (Commander Kim Byungyun) held the "2025 Salvation Army Charity Kettle Opening and Closing Ceremony - Light of Hope" at Gwanghwamun Square (Playground) in Seoul on November 28, marking the start of the year-end charity kettle campaign.
This year's campaign theme, "Light of Hope," embodies the spirit of the charity kettle, which has consistently brought hope to the streets for the past 97 years for neighbors struggling due to social and economic crises. It also delivers the message that each citizen can participate as a "messenger of hope" to help brighten the darkness in our society together.
At the closing ceremony held on the 28th, from the left, Kim Dohyung, Director of the Office of General Affairs at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Cha Sunsam, Territorial President of the Salvation Army Women's Ministries; Heo Eunah, Secretary for National Integration at the Presidential Office; Park Seungryul, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK); Seo Younggyo, Member of the National Assembly from the Democratic Party of Korea; Jeon Seonghwan, Senior Secretary for Listening and Integration at the Presidential Office; Kim Byungyun, Commander of the Salvation Army; Oh Sehoon, Mayor of Seoul; Won Jongyun, Head of ESG Planning at NH Nonghyup Bank; Lee Kyunggu, CEO of Whistler Korea; Han Sejong, Secretary General of the Salvation Army; and Na Iyong, President of CBS Christian Broadcasting, attended. This year, the charity kettle has introduced an NFC-based donation system. By simply tagging a smartphone on the donation pad, anyone can make a donation in just 14 seconds without installing an app, making it easy for everyone to participate even without cash. The NFC donation system is available not only on major streets nationwide, but also at select LG Uplus stores, Jeju Airport duty-free shops, and some retail locations.
In addition to street charity kettles, citizens can participate in various ways, including the "Special Charity Kettle" talent donation activities, "Sharing Education" with daycare centers and schools, the "Love December" campaign involving churches nationwide, corporate social contribution programs, and the online gift support campaign "Santa Trio." One-time online donations can also be made easily through the Salvation Army's official website using a simple payment system.
Commander Kim Byungyun stated, "For the past 97 years, the Salvation Army has stood by those in need, and this year, we will continue to share in their hardships. When citizens' warm participation comes together, it will bring hope to our neighbors' lives and make our society a little warmer."
The Salvation Army began its work in Seoul in 1928 and marks its 97th anniversary this year. The charity kettle fundraising campaign, which started in Myeong-dong on this day, will meet citizens in over 300 locations nationwide until December 31.
