Sharing This Item in Cold Weather Can Lead to Hair Loss... Experts Warn

Concerns Over Rising Scalp Tinea Infections This Year
"Sharing Hats, Towels, and Combs Can Lead to Hair Loss"

As the weather turns colder and demand for winter accessories such as hats rises, experts have warned that the habit of sharing hats with others can lead to scalp ringworm infection. Although ringworm was once considered a disease of impoverished areas, it is actually a common contagious fungal skin infection that still occurs frequently today. If left untreated, it can cause scalp damage and hair loss, so caution is advised.

Sharing Hats, Towels, and Combs Increases Risk of Infection Spread

The Daily Mail reported on the 26th (local time) that "cases of ringworm infection surged in the United Kingdom last year," and that "there are concerns about the spread of ringworm again this winter." The outlet explained that while scalp ringworm may seem like an old disease, it is actually a common infection that 10-20% of the population experiences at some point in their lives.

Experts pointed out that "scalp ringworm is easily transmitted through sharing everyday items such as hats, towels, and pillow covers." Sam Shinkir, CEO of Este Medical Group, explained, "Ringworm is a common infection experienced by 10-20% of the population, and sharing hats in winter significantly increases the risk of infection." He added, "Treatment is possible with antifungal medications or specialized shampoos, but if left untreated, it can cause permanent damage such as alopecia areata." He emphasized, "The most effective way to prevent infection is to never share items that come into contact with the scalp, such as hats or combs."

Early Treatment Is Key

According to the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom, the main symptoms of ringworm include: ▲itchiness ▲round lesions with crusting or scaling ▲red patches (which may appear gray or brown depending on skin tone) ▲and ring-shaped rashes.

Scratching the infected area can spread the fungus to other parts of the body, so caution is necessary. Bedding and clothing that may have come into contact with the scalp should be washed immediately. Experts stress, "If you notice any abnormal symptoms on your scalp, getting a medical diagnosis and early treatment is the most reliable way to reduce the risk of hair loss."
