Amid a large number of casualties caused by a fire in a Hong Kong apartment complex, CJ ENM has decided to proceed with the popular music awards ceremony, the 2025 MAMA Awards, as scheduled.
On the 27th, CJ ENM stated, "We are taking great care in the overall stage design and proceedings to ensure that the performance delivers comfort and hope rather than just spectacle," adding, "We will include a 'Support Hong Kong' message, hold a moment of remembrance, and contribute donations to support the victims."
The MAMA Awards will be held at Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong on the 28th and 29th. Most of the performers have already arrived locally and completed their rehearsals.
According to the music industry, CJ ENM informed the performers' teams earlier that morning, "We are aware of the seriousness of the situation and are discussing response measures." During these discussions, it was decided to adjust fireworks, special effects, and some stage elements, while the red carpet event has been canceled. The Hong Kong English-language newspaper The Standard reported that a moment of silence will be added to the opening, and the ceremony will be broadcast in a recorded format.
However, concerns have been raised about whether it is appropriate to proceed with such a large-scale music awards ceremony immediately after the disaster, as the fire at the Wang Fuk Court high-rise apartment complex in the northern Tai Po area on the 26th resulted in 55 deaths and over 300 missing persons. The fire site is approximately 20 kilometers from the venue.
CJ ENM stated, "We believe in the healing and unifying power of music," and added, "We will continue to prepare for the awards ceremony with the utmost responsibility and dedication."
This year's ceremony will feature numerous K-pop artists, including Babymonster, Enhypen, Stray Kids, Zerobaseone, TWS, Hearts2Hearts, and G-Dragon.
